GE Healthcare's Unique Office Space: A Fusion of Architecture and Medical Imaging

Designers Bella Ventura and Eleanor Hashalom Rondelle Create an Architectural Masterpiece

GE Healthcare's office space, designed by Bella Ventura and Eleanor Hashalom Rondelle, is a unique blend of architecture and medical imaging, reflecting the company's core business. This award-winning design is a testament to the innovative use of space and materials to create a functional, yet aesthetically pleasing work environment.

The design inspiration for this project was drawn from GE Healthcare's cutting-edge technology, which allows for the visualization of human body tissues and layers from the outside. The designers aimed to give architectural expression to this uniqueness, creating a meeting point between architectural design aspects and medical imaging elements.

The unique properties of this design lie in its reflection of what GE Healthcare does. The designers started by analyzing the company's work and how it could be reflected architecturally. The goal was to celebrate GE Healthcare's uniqueness and identify the point where architectural design could encounter and merge with elements of medical imaging.

The realization of this design involved the use of changing elements of wood to build a 3D picture, similar to the benches that grow out of the various segments and textures, revealing the workspaces as if exploring the body's inner organs. The project size was 4,200 sqm, with a floor height of 4.5 meters.

The new office design encourages shared productive efforts and preserves the fine balance between closed private spaces and open spaces for social meetings and gatherings. The project started in November 2016 in Haifa, Israel, and was completed in August 2017.

During the research phase, interviews were conducted with GE Healthcare staff to understand the methods of work and the equipment used. The aim was to translate the technological elements into architectural language. The challenge was to create an architectural design that would encounter and merge with elements of medical imaging, yet allow an operative workplace, including labs, open space workstations, and meeting rooms.

This design was awarded the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2018. This award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. They are venerated products and bright ideas that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
